2007 TOURNAMENT RECAP:

The inaugural Turning Stone Resort Championship began with an opening round played under perfect conditions. Atunyote® was immaculate and the outstanding weather conditions, sunny and 80 degrees with a slight breeze, helped to welcome the PGA TOUR to Central New York.

Jeff Gove and Chad Campbell were the leaders after the first round of play. They both posted rounds of 7 under 65. Eventual Champion Steve Flesch was one stroke behind with a 66 while Oswego native and fan favorite David Branshaw shot a 68 to find himself 3 shots off the lead.

Round two began as a duplicate of round one. Beautiful weather helped result in more tremendous golf and low scores. Brendon de Jonge scored well early on taking the lead at 12 under until Steve Flesch teed off in the afternoon. Steve Flesch began his round with a birdie on 10th hole, and eagle on hole 12. After back to back birdies on 13 and 14, he birdied 18 as well to finish the back nine with a 30. He went on to post a 65, for a two day total of 131 and the lead heading into the weekend.

Flesch cruised to another 66 on Saturday to take a four shot lead over Carl Pettersson and Charles Warren. History was made on Saturday as Shaun Micheel, winner of the PGA Championship in 2003, recorded the first ace of the Tournament on the par 3 16th.

With the increase in the winds, the final round saw rising scores. Flesch bogeyed the first two holes and left the door open for challengers. Michael Allen presented the biggest threat to Flesch as he posted birdies on 16 and 17 to finish at 16 under for the Tournament.

But Steve Flesch held strong. He came up with clutch shots when he needed them and despite posting his only over par round of the tournament, a one over 73 held off the challenger to become the Turning Stone Resort Championship’s first winner and take home the one million dollar prize.

STEVE FLESCH – Winner – 2007 Turning  Stone Resort Championship:

With a victory at the inaugural Turning Stone Resort Championship, Steve Flesch won for the second time in 2007 and the fourth time overall on the PGA TOUR. Posting a four day total of 18 under par 270, Flesch became the first winner in Turning Stone history and collected the $1,080,000 winner’s check.

Steve Flesch was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1967 and currently resides in Union, Kentucky. After beginning the game as a right-handed player, he switched to his natural left-hand and became one of four left-handers to win on the Nationwide Tour. He turned pro in 1990 and played the Nationwide Tour until 1998. In 1998 he was voted PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year, becoming the first left-handed golfer to receive the honor.

2003 was a breakout year for Flesch as he earned his first PGA TOUR victory at the HP Classic of New Orleans and earned a career-high $2,269,630, thanks to nine top-10 finishes. That same year he shot a career low 62 in the first round of the Las Vegas Invitational.

Flesch followed up his first victory in ’03 with a win at the Bank of America Colonial. He also had his first top ten finish at a major, with a tie for 7th at the U.S. Open. He surpassed two million in earnings for the second consecutive year.

His game has continued to improve and in 2006 he ran off a string of 10 consecutive cuts (26 overall cuts for the season) from late April through mid-July. His best ’06 finishes included a tie for 3rd at the International and Chrysler Classic of Greensboro, a tie for 9th at the Buick Championship and a tie for 10th at the BellSouth Classic.
